This course reviews the complex dynamics of adoption, for the birth mother, adoptive parents and adoptee. Using a literature review and reports of people with adoptive experiences, this course helps social workers more effectively assist their patients to work through the guilt, abandonment fears, anger, joy and other feelings involved.
Assigned readings from The Primal Wound by Nancy Verrier will be the focus. Bring this book with you on Tuesday May 9, or IIGP will have available to purchase for $10.00 on May 9, 2017.
Participants will:
- Identify the common psycho-dynamics in adoption.
- Recognize their own reactions to the adoption experience.
- List factors which enhance the success for people involved in adoption.
David Baker, LMSW, ACSW began his career 33 years ago in substance abuse counseling. He is currently and IIGP faculty supervisor and President of the organization. He is Past President of the Michigan Group Psychotherapy Society, a clinical member of AGPA and has led numerous workshops at the local and national level. Mr. Baker treats patients in private practice for Individual and Group Psychotherapy in Southfield, Michigan.
Marcia B. Stein, MSW has over 25 years of clinical experience. She works in private practice primarily treating adults in an individual and group modality. She is a member of NASW, AGPA and MGPS and has presented locally, nationally and internationally. Mrs. Stein was President of the Michigan Group Psychotherapy Society from 2001 through 2003 and served as an editor of the International Journal of Psychotherapy and Critical Thought. She received her M.A. from Oakland University and her M.S.W. from Wayne State University and has been a faculty member of the Institute for Individual and Group Psychotherapy for a number of years.
